The halogen element Bromine is a reactive liquid at room temperature that finds broad industrial application due to its unique chemical properties and versatile behaviour in derived compounds. Its effectiveness as an oxidising halogen and its ability to form stable bromide and organobromine compounds enable uses in flame-retardant plastics, electronics housings, upholstered furniture, oil-field chemicals and antiseptics. In water treatment and disinfection, bromine derivatives are valued for microbial control, especially in heated or closed systems like swimming pools and cooling towers, where they remain effective under challenging conditions. Meanwhile, in oil-and-gas operations, bromine-based drilling fluids and completion fluids assist in well stabilisation, corrosion inhibition and reservoir productivity. The production of bromine typically involves extraction from brine resources through oxidation of bromide ions and subsequent purification of elemental bromine or bromide compounds, allowing supply to support diverse chemical value-chains.

Bromine’s incorporation into flame-retardant systems remains one of its most substantial applications, where it is chemically grafted into polymer matrices or used in additive form to interrupt combustion chains and enhance fire safety performance. In this role, bromine-enhanced materials contribute to meeting regulatory fire standards in construction, electronics, transportation and textile industries. As a crucial halogen chemical intermediate, bromine is used to produce a variety of brominated organics, flame-retardant additives, drilling fluids and water-treatment agents. The element’s use in photographic chemicals, catalysts, fumigants, and chemical intermediates also underscores its breadth of utility. Although regulatory considerations and environmental concerns have driven the development of alternatives in certain sectors, bromine continues to be essential in many high-value applications where performance and safety requirements are stringent. With increasing demand for advanced materials, safer water-treatment technologies, oil-field chemicals and flame-retardant solutions, bromine remains a foundational chemical that supports innovation and performance across a wide range of industrial systems.
