Martin Marincin squeezed out of spot placed on waivers by Maple Leaf

Martin Marincin spent Wednesday night in the pre s box, a healthy scratch watching his Toronto Maple Leafs whip the Winnipeg Jets, 7-2, in their season opener. Now, he won't even be one of the Leafs' extras moving forward after the team placed the 25-year-old defenseman on waivers Thursday. Marincin was acquired from the Edmonton Oilers in June 2015 and scored two goals and 12 a sists in 90 games for Toronto, but saw his role beginning to decrease last season with the additions of Connor Carrick and Nikita Zaitsev. He appeared in a career-low 25 games a year ago and barely made the opening-night roster as part of a Angus Crookshank Jersey revamped defense this fall. The Leafs added veteran Ron Hainsey and Swedish rookies Andreas Borgman and Calle Rosen in free agency over the summer, which pushed the lanky defenseman further down the Leafs depth chart. Toronto also has defenseman Roman Polak waiting in limbo. The Leafs released the 31-year-old blueliner from his profe sional tryout earlier this week but indicated that he would continue to practice with the club. Indications are that Polak will not stick around for a long time waiting before exploring options with other NHL clubs or in Europe. Polak appeared in 75 games with the Maple Leafs last season. MORE : Matthews tops Laine as Leafs thump Jets in opener Head coach Mike Babcock indicated at the opening of training camp that Marincin had to bring his game to a higher level to make the Leafs roster. (Marincin) can really skate, can pa s the puck, does a lot of things, but hes never really grabbed hold of (a job) yet," explained Babcock. "If you dont eventually grab hold of it, you are not in the league anymore. Martys in a situation, with Rosen, Borgman and Carrick here, hes battling for a job." It appears it is a job the veteran of 175 NHL games has lost. Marincin is in the last year of a two-year, $2.5 million contract; and if he clears waivers, Toronto will be able to bury $1.025 Million of his $1.25 Million salary if he is sent down to the American Hockey League or all of his salary if he is claimed by another NHL club.
