MONTREAL -- Pierre Turgeon ishappy to be back in Montreal, happy to be back at Bell Centre, and happy to be back in the NHL as an a sistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings. In returning to Montreal this week, Turgeon basked in the fond memories of his brief time with the Canadiens in the mid-1990s. The highlight was having the good fortune of serving as Montreals captain for the last game at the old Forum on March 11, 1996, and the first game at their brand-new downtown arena, originally christened the Molson Centre. Youve got to be at the right place at the right time, and I was, thats just what it is, Turgeon said Wednesday. Walking in here today, I still have goosebumps. Theres just something about those great memories. Turgeon remains humbled to have received the torch from Guy Carbonneau and extinguished its flame at center ice to punctuate an emotional ceremony that featured a never-ending standing ovation for Maurice Rocket Richard. Its incredible, Turgeon said. I mean, this is going to be forever. So for me, being a young kid and growing up in Rouyn-Noranda and just being a part of this, it was just a dream. Turgeon is breaking new ground with the Kings as their offensive co- Juan Mejia Jersey ordinator, to borrow a football term, in a bid to tap their players creativity to increase scoring. Hired for his first coaching job in the NHL, the 500-goal scorer has helped deliver promising results so far.Los Angeles has averaged 3.44 goals per game in getting off to a 7-1-1 start. I study a lot, I analyze a lot, Turgeon said. I spend a lot of time between periods looking at video, particularly the power play. Do we have time? Not enough time? Whats our opponent doing? I study that a lot, and shootouts. You can study goalies, what do you have to do? There are a lot of things where today you can go to the video and really slow it down and break down the details of what you have to do. That helps a lot. Its not like it used to be, with VHS. Its a bit different. NHL Power Rankings: Habs tumble towards bottom of league Turgeon wasnt actively looking to get back into the NHL when Kings president Luc Robitaille called him in June. Robitaille asked him to come out to California where he met with GM Rob Blake and coach John Stevens to discu s the approach they wanted to take to create more offense. Hes really involved in focusing on the offensive part of the game and tracking scoring chances, looking at areas of the game we can be better at, face-offs, plays around the net, body position, the finer details and offensive part of the game for everybody, Stevens said. And hes got an ability to offer his insight and a guy who sees the game at a higher level. Were just coaches. We study the game and think we know what were doing, hes a guy thats played the game at a high level offensively. He can really give us some keen insight into what were trying to get accomplished. Kings forwardDustin Brown said Turgeons presence has definitely had a hand in the Kings getting off to a fast start. I think a big part of it is hes just kind of in the background and giving bits and pieces, tidbits to players as opposed to the Xs and Os part, Brown said. He pulls you aside and gives you a tip here, a tip there, and really positive energy. And also every tip he gives its not, I want you to do this, or, this is what you should be doing, its, Hey, heres an idea. Let it bounce around in your head for a little bit and see if it works for you, because sometimes you get molded into a type of player that doesnt work. Hes kind of there to give you a different way of looking at things and I think its been really good for a lot of players on our team. And if Turgeons approach and role prove to be a new wave in the NHL, Brown welcomes the innovation. As a player, I mean, hey, we all dont want to be told what to do to be quite honest, Brown said. I think theres room in the game for what hes trying to do with us. And it helps that he played and was a really good player, so when he gives you something, you listen and you try to see if it will work for your type of game, what you want to do.
