Medical adhesives are a diverse group of products designed for specific clinical applications, ranging from wound closure to medical device attachment. They are broadly categorized into cyanoacrylates, fibrin adhesives, polyurethane-based adhesives, silicone adhesives, and hydrogel adhesives. Cyanoacrylate adhesives are among the most popular due to their fast polymerization and strong bonding properties, making them ideal for closing minor cuts, lacerations, and surgical incisions. These adhesives form a protective barrier over wounds, minimizing infection risk and eliminating the need for sutures in minor procedures.

Fibrin adhesives, derived from human or animal plasma, mimic the body’s natural clotting process. They are extensively used in surgical applications such as cardiovascular surgeries, liver resections, and orthopedic procedures. Fibrin adhesives not only provide hemostatic benefits but also support tissue regeneration. Polyurethane-based adhesives are gaining attention for their flexibility and strong bonding, particularly in wound dressings and wearable medical devices. These adhesives are resistant to moisture, making them suitable for applications where long-term adhesion is required. Silicone adhesives, known for their gentle skin adhesion, are ideal for patients with sensitive or fragile skin, often used in neonatal care and long-term medical devices. Lastly, hydrogel adhesives are water-based adhesives that provide a moist environment for wounds, promoting faster healing, and are commonly used in burn care and chronic wound management.

The application of medical adhesives extends beyond wound care to drug delivery systems, biosensors, and diagnostic devices. For instance, adhesive patches are widely used in transdermal drug delivery, providing controlled release of medication while minimizing discomfort. Similarly, adhesives are integral in attaching wearable devices such as heart rate monitors and glucose sensors, ensuring consistent skin contact without irritation. The choice of adhesive is guided by factors such as tissue type, required bond strength, duration of adhesion, and biocompatibility. With ongoing research focusing on biodegradable and antimicrobial adhesives, the range of applications is expanding further. By selecting the right type of adhesive for each clinical requirement, healthcare providers can improve patient outcomes, reduce procedure times, and enhance overall care efficiency.
