Their releases are always a mixed bag, but there's something about their commitment to unearthing obscure gems that's hard to deny. The label has a knack for reviving forgotten classics, and their latest reissue of FARINELLI's Tenebra is a perfect example.

Revisiting the Darkness

Tenebra, released in 2026, is a sonic exploration of the unknown. It's a record that defies easy categorization, veering wildly between ambient textures and distorted, fuzz-laden riffs. The result is a deeply unsettling listening experience that's equal parts fascinating and frustrating. On one hand, FARINELLI's sonic experimentation is admirable, pushing the boundaries of what's considered acceptable in the realm of underground music. On the other, the record's meandering structure and inconsistent tempo make it a tough listen at times. I've found myself returning to Tenebra again and again, trying to tease out its underlying themes and motifs. It's a record that rewards close listening, but also one that's prone to frustratingly opaque moments. The title track, with its haunting synths and pulsing rhythms, is a standout – but even here, the sense of tension and release is fleeting, disappearing as quickly as it arrives. But hey, at least it's not like they're charging us an extra $10 for some overpriced, glossy box with a bunch of unnecessary inserts.

Okay, so we've established that the packaging is a bit of a joke. But what about the music itself? Is it any good? Well, let me tell you - it's a mixed bag. On the one hand, the production quality is top-notch, with crisp, clear sound and a nice balance of frequencies. But on the other hand, the songwriting is a bit...underwhelming. I mean, it's not like it's bad or anything, but it's just so...safe. You've got your standard-issue darkwave tropes - the brooding synths, the driving beat, the "oh no, the world is ending" lyrics - but none of it feels particularly original or interesting.

I've been listening to this album nonstop for the past week, and while it's definitely grown on me, I'm still not entirely sold on it. I mean, it's a solid effort, but it's just so...predictable.
