Growing up, my friends and I would spend hours playing video games, and one of the franchises that dominated our conversations was the Mario series. It's hard to believe, but it's been years since I've last picked up a controller, and it's even harder to accept that I've become somewhat of a nostalgia-tinged critic of the series. I mean, who doesn't love a good jump-and-run platformer, right? But the thing is, as I've grown older, I've come to realize that the Mario games, particularly the more recent ones, have become somewhat... bland.

The Problem with Modern Mario

I know some people will disagree with me, but I think the series has lost a bit of its magic in recent years. It's not just the repetitive level design or the lack of innovation – although, those are definitely issues. The problem lies deeper. I think the games have become too focused on accessibility and too afraid to take risks. I mean, who wants to introduce a new gameplay mechanic when you can just make sure that the game is easy to play? It's a safe approach, but it's also a boring one. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Mario games should be incredibly difficult – but they should at least challenge the player in some way.
