Cutting Mechanics of Diamond Hole Saw Explained
A Diamond Hole Saw is engineered with a hollow cylindrical body coated with industrial diamond particles along the cutting edge. Its primary working principle is abrasion rather than slicing, making it suitable for brittle and ultra-hard materials.
The cutting rim is usually manufactured using electroplated or vacuum-brazed technology. Electroplated versions provide sharp, exposed diamond particles ideal for glass and ceramics, while brazed versions offer stronger bonding suitable for stone and masonry materials.
During operation, the tool rotates at controlled speeds while applying light pressure. The diamonds grind away microscopic layers of material, gradually forming a circular hole. This method minimizes mechanical shock, reducing the risk of cracking in fragile materials.
The core design also includes side slots or openings. These serve two purposes: improving coolant flow and allowing debris removal. Efficient chip evacuation prevents clogging and improves cutting stability.
Typical cutting depths range from 10mm to 50mm depending on tool size. In deeper applications, multiple passes or specialized extension systems may be used.
Material compatibility includes glass, porcelain, ceramic tile, marble, granite, fiberglass, and certain composite materials. However, it is not suitable for metals or reinforced steel, as these require different cutting mechanics.
Heat control is critical in maintaining performance. Excessive friction can degrade diamond bonding, so water cooling or wet drilling is strongly recommended.
Understanding the structure and mechanics of a Diamond Hole Saw helps operators achieve better efficiency, longer tool life, and higher-quality results in precision drilling tasks.
