NHL trade deadline Penguins seeking another goal score
The have already made some moves this season to bolster the lineup, but general manager Jim Rutherford isnt nece sarily satisfied with how the team looks. Thats particularly true when it comes to their games against Metropolitan Division opponents. The Penguins have just two wins against Metropolitan Division teams currently in playoff position this season. Their overall record against those clubs is an unsightly 2-7-2. Given the NHL's playoff format, the Penguins are more likely Niko Huuhtanen Jersey to play one of those three other teams than not. That has Rutherford thinking of the playoffs and how teams will attempt to shut down top forwards and . Both have been markedly better outside of the division when it comes to production. As Rutherford shared with Jason Mackey of the , thats why hes eyeing some . We're getting into the period where names are going to surface and teams are going to get serious, Rutherford said. If it's a guy who's capable of scoring a goal or a big goal, I would like to get that guy because if Sid and Geno get shut down, we need to be able to win games with our third and fourth lines. That's what teams try to do to us. They try to shut those guys down. If they shut those guys down, and you don't have enough balance on your third and fourth line where you can score periodically, then you can't win.Star players are tough to shut down, but the Penguins have shown over the last few postseasons that if Crosby and Malkin aren't scoring, they're going to struggle. There was no clearer example than last postseason when Crosby was hampered by injuries. The noted struggles within the division show that Rutherford has reason to expre s concern. Only 13 of Crosby's 58 points have come over the 20 divisional games. For Malkin, 15 of his 53 points have come in 19 Metro games. Those numbers aren't bad, but they're markedly different than their figures outside of divisional play.Obviously, most general managers wouldn't normally expect opponents to shut down their own top guys, but when there are fewer additional threats in the lineup, it becomes easier to key on the stars. The Pens already have a good mix of wings that can put the puck in the net, but beyond the top six, there's not a lot of offense to scare opponents come playoff time when secondary scoring can make a huge difference in results.Rutherford is in a position now that he hasnt been in a long time over his career as an NHL general manager. The Penguins have shown that they will do whatever is nece sary to win and win now. Theyre already spending to the salary cap, so if they did make a deal, theyd probably have to move some salary around. One of the players that could be on the way out of Pittsburgh via trade is . The noted agitator is on an expiring deal worth $1 million. That only clears a little bit of space and is unlikely to bring back the kind of help Rutherford is talking about, at least not alone. He is a movable a set, though. With all of the movement up and down the lineup since Rutherford took control of the hockey decisions in Pittsburgh, it seems prudent to expect more before the March 2 deadline. It's going to take some creativity on the general manager's part, though. Fredrik Claesson Jersey
