ESPN.coms Katie Strang reports that the veteran center is part of an ongoing investigation by authorities in Canada. :Mike Richards, whose contract has been terminated by theLos Angeles Kings, is part of an ongoing investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for an off-ice incident, a source told ESPN.com on Tuesday.A spokesperson for the RCMP in Manitoba T. J. Warren Jersey told ESPN that, as of Tuesday, no charges have been brought against Richards but declined to comment further.The source said that Canadian Border Services is also involved in the investigation, but a spokesperson declined comment, citing Canadian privacy laws. reported an undisclosed incident occurred on June 17, but the Kings were only made aware of the situation about an hour after the NHL Draft started on Friday. At that time, the team broke off trade talks centering around Richards with the and as each of those teams confirmed.The Kings have not commented and will not comment on the situation. In a release Monday, the team confirmed that it was excersising its right to terminate Richards' contract for a material breach of his responsibilities. By terminating Richards contract, the team won't be responsible for paying the $22 million left on the deal, but will reportedly be hit with a $1.32 million salary cap recapture penalty for the next five years. Considering that Richards has not formally been charged, these recent developments raise only more questions considering how Kings defenseman Slava Voynov, who is awaiting trial on domestic violence charges, has been handled. Voynov is currently under indefinite suspension from the NHL and an additional suspension from the Kings for a non-hockey related injury. However, his contract has not been terminated and likely wont be until after the case is heard in court, if at all.Richards, who has a higher cap hit and more years remaining on his deal than Voynov, is not getting the same treatment despite not being charged with anything yet. However, not knowing the details, its difficult to fully understand the differences between the two situations.According to Strang, the NHL was notified of the Kings intension to terminate Richards contract before he was placed on unconditional waivers Sunday, which is required before a team can terminate a players contract.The NHLPA said in a statement Monday that they are in the proce s of gathering the facts and will talk with Richards before deciding on a course of action. According to Friedman, they have 60 days to file for an appeal. This is a bizarre situation, to say the least, one that we may not fully understand until more details trickle out, if they make it to the public at all.
