Just a few days after dropping Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final in heartbreaking fashion to the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Rangers appear set to move on in trying to get back to playing for the championship. Richards has six years remaining on his contract that pays him $6.7 million a year, but played a reserve role in the Rangers' playoff run, scoring five goals and seven a sists while averaging 17 minutes on the ice during the postseason. MORE: | | Larry Brooks of the Post called it a "fait accompli" that Richards has played his last game for the Rangers, and the Globe's Fluto Shinzawa said that the Rangers would be right to use their amnesty on Richards due to his diminishing skills. "When the Rangers needed Richards the most, the de facto captain didnt deliver," Shinzawa wrote, saying that Richards' legs are clearly fading. "Through the first four games of the Stanley Cup Final, Richards submitted zeros acro s the board: no goals, no a sists, no points." But there is still that financial incentive and it's pretty significant. According to Shinzawa, the Rangers owe Richards $1 million annually for the last three years of his contract. If Richards were to retire after the 2017-2018 season, Shinzawa reports that the Rangers would have about $5.7 million against the cap in dead money.
