The Sodium sulfide is a yellowish crystalline chemical with the formula Na₂S, widely employed across various industrial applications. It is highly soluble in water and emits a characteristic odor of hydrogen sulfide. The leather industry heavily relies on sodium sulfide for dehairing animal hides before tanning. In the pulp and paper industry, it plays a vital role in the Kraft process, which separates lignin from cellulose to produce high-quality paper. Sodium sulfide also has applications in wastewater treatment, helping precipitate heavy metals and detoxify effluents. Beyond these, it is used as a raw material in the production of sulfur-containing chemicals, dyes, and rubber chemicals. Handling sodium sulfide requires caution, as it is corrosive and can release toxic gases when in contact with acids or moisture. Safety protocols, including protective clothing, proper ventilation, and storage in sealed containers, are essential. Its versatility and effectiveness make sodium sulfide a key chemical in industrial manufacturing and environmental management.
