Lamar Down in GTA 5: U4GM Canon Fate Guide
The easiest way to settle Lamar Davis's fate is to look at what the game lets you carry forward. Lamar stays alive in GTA 5's completed story, even though he spends much of the campaign acting like he's trying to get himself killed. He picks fights, trusts Stretch far too easily, and drags Franklin into mess after mess. Players who buy GTA 5 Money and replay missions often see him go down in combat, but those deaths only trigger a failed mission screen. They do not become part of the plot.
"Lamar Down" is the big one. Stretch sets Lamar up, and Franklin, Michael, and Trevor head to the sawmill to pull him out. It's a rough rescue, and Lamar can catch a bullet if the player loses control of the fight. Still, the game won't let that result stand. You reload, try again, and rescue him properly. The same thing happens during the foundry fight in Ending C. Lamar is exposed, enemies come from every angle, and keeping him alive can feel like work. Yet a successful run always means he walks away.

That zero matters more than it might seem. GTA 5 has plenty of brutal moments, but it separates a failed attempt from actual story continuity. Lamar can be hit by gunfire, blown up, or left exposed during a shootout, yet the game always sends you back to a checkpoint. There's no route where Franklin chooses to kill him, either. Ending A focuses on Trevor, Ending B focuses on Michael, and Ending C puts the three protagonists against their enemies. Lamar isn't the sacrifice in any of them. Later GTA Online material also treats him as alive, which backs up what the campaign already shows.
Lamar survives because he's more than Franklin's loudmouth friend from the old neighbourhood. He represents the part of Franklin's life that can't be cleaned up just by buying a nicer house or working with bigger criminals. Franklin gets fed up with him, sure, but he also knows Lamar's loyalty is real, even when his judgement is terrible. That's why the rescue works emotionally. Lamar doesn't suddenly become sensible after the sawmill, and he probably never will. Whether you're replaying missions or spending cheap GTA 5 Casino Chips at the casino, the story's position stays clear: Lamar is alive, still reckless, and still part of Franklin's world.
