Applications, Siting and Competition in the Compressed Air Energy Storage Market

Utilities and developers weighing storage options are increasingly looking beyond short-duration assets. Within the compressed air energy storage market, deployment decisions hinge on three practical questions: which grid services the system will provide, which geology or storage form is available, and how the economics compare with alternatives. This article examines those questions using the application, storage, and project data in Polaris Market Research's report.

The compressed air energy storage market is drawing attention as utilities and developers look for dependable ways to firm up variable renewable power. Compressed-air energy storage (CAES) stores energy by compressing air into underground caverns or engineered vessels and later expands it through turbines to generate electricity. According to Polaris Market Research, the global market was valued at USD 9.17 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 62.65 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 23.80% from 2026 to 2034. For technology buyers and investors, the central question is which system design best fits a given project.

Supporting Renewables and the Grid

CAES stores surplus generation and dispatches it when wind or solar output falls short, which supports renewable energy integration. It also reduces curtailment of renewable resources, increases their capacity factor, and provides firm, dispatchable power that lessens reliance on fossil backup. Policy is a driver. The European Commission launched the REPowerEU Plan in May 2022 to save energy, diversify supplies, and produce more clean energy, and according to the International Energy Agency, 38.2% of total energy in Europe was generated through renewables in 2022.

In utility-scale applications, systems store electricity as compressed air during off-peak periods and release it at peak demand, providing dependable grid balancing, peak shaving, and black start capabilities. CAES also offers frequency regulation and spinning reserve, and units can start without an external power source. The report's revenue-model analysis lists energy arbitrage, capacity payments, ancillary services payments, long-term PPAs, and grid decarbonization contracts, noting that ancillary services add $23-28/kW-yr via co-optimization.

Storage Forms and Siting

Traditional CAES storage accounted for an 82.0% share in 2025 as the most established, commercially available form. Within it, solution-mined salt caverns act as high-pressure air reservoirs, but they require thick, laterally continuous bedded or domal salt with low permeability and self-healing creep behavior. Other traditional options include porous-rock aquifers and mines or hard-rock caverns. Suitable underground spaces are not available everywhere, which limits project locations. In December 2025, EllisDon and Cache Power announced Canada's first commercial CAES facility in northeast Alberta. The project uses Siemens Energy technology and underground salt caverns, with plans to store up to 48 hours of energy after securing regulatory approvals and beginning early construction in late 2025.

Liquid gas CAES storage is expected to grow at a CAGR of 22.9% because of its energy density advantages. It offers higher energy density, flexible siting, and fewer geological limitations than traditional cavern-based CAES. Its insulated cryogenic tanks can be configured as modular tank farms and co-located with industrial sites or power plants, without the need for cavern or aquifer characterization.

CAES Compared With Batteries

CAES delivers longer durations at lower incremental cost than lithium-ion batteries, which suits multi-hour to multi-day needs such as capacity support during extended weather events. It typically offers stronger grid services like inertia and stable, dispatchable power, but its response is slower than the millisecond-level reaction of batteries. Upfront costs are a trade-off: compressors, turbines, caverns, and large-scale infrastructure are expensive compared with battery energy storage systems, and CAES also requires suitable geology, larger project footprints, and longer permitting times.

Regional Momentum and Project Pipeline

North America held the largest share at 32.0% in 2025 on demand for long-duration storage. Asia Pacific is expected to register a CAGR of 28.0%, with India, Japan, and Southeast Asia exploring CAES for microgrids, industrial hubs, and remote regions, while Europe is expected to see a CAGR of 23.4% on rising renewable penetration. In California, the Willow Rock Energy Storage Center is planned at 500 MW and 4,000 MWh (8 hours), with a conditional DOE loan of USD 1.76 billion and a 25-year PPA with Central Coast Community Energy. In China, the Hubei Yingchang project, at 300 MW and 1,500 MWh, has been recently announced.

Companies listed in the report include ALACAES, Apex Compressed Air Energy Storage, LLC, Bright Energy Storage Technologies, General Compression Ltd (GCL), Hydrostor Inc., LightSail Energy, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Ridge Energy Storage and Grid Services LP, Siemens Energy AG, and Storelectric Limited. Risks for the compressed air energy storage market include high upfront capital costs, geological site limitations, regulatory uncertainty, lengthy permitting, and competition from advanced batteries and other long-duration storage technologies.

Conclusion

The compressed air energy storage market is expected to gain momentum as renewable energy integration and demand for large-scale energy storage solutions continue to increase. Growing investments in grid modernization and the need to balance intermittent electricity generation are supporting interest in compressed air energy storage technologies. Technological developments aimed at improving energy efficiency, storage capacity, and operational flexibility are further influencing market expansion. However, high capital investment, geographical constraints, and energy conversion losses remain significant challenges. Increasing emphasis on energy security, grid stability, and long-duration storage applications is expected to create new opportunities. Overall, the market holds promising growth potential as energy systems transition toward more flexible, sustainable, and reliable power infrastructure.
