Antifouling Coatings: Key Technologies Driving Marine Sustainability

Technological innovation is becoming a major differentiator in the Antifouling Coatings space. Traditional systems based on copper compounds or biocides are increasingly challenged by newer formulations—self-polishing copolymers, non-leaching surfaces, and hybrid coatings offering improved longevity and reduced environmental footprint. These advances help ensure hull surfaces remain smooth, clean and hydrodynamically efficient for longer periods.

In parallel, requirements for faster shipyard application, longer service life between dry-docks and better compatibility with modern hull materials (composites, aluminium, steel hybrids) add further pressure on coating developers. As a result, coating producers and ship-owners are investing more in testing, certification and performance validation to ensure coatings deliver real value in operational settings.
